On April 9th, 2006 a group of Liberian women got together to form a services oriented group, which will cater to the Liberian elderly, and other vulnerable community members. The Productive Women of Minnesota, though still in its formative stages is a core group of seven women with a passion to help.
Georgia Totimeh, 1st beneficiary
When one of the women were asked recently about the purpose of the organization, she mentioned that though the criteria and other requirements for the organization will be outlined at the next meeting, the general goal is to create a sense of empowerment for women, give them a sense of community and togetherness. They want to deal with community issues, becoming positive role models for younger women in the community.

She also mentioned that the organization would deal with personal issues facing women, issues that affect them such as their health, relationships, sexuality, contraception, teen-age pregnancy and the other roles they have to play in society.
All in all, the Productive Women of Minnesota aims to become an effective volunteer service in the community, focusing in the areas of women, children, the aging, and the environment. It is not a social club.
Women at the services
As a test of its resolve, the women on April 28th2006, assisted the family of Georgia Totimeh after her plea for assistance with the home going for her sister who passed away after a protracted illness.
The group provided food and beverages for the wake keeping and decorated the church and served at the funeral services.
Georgia was very happy and called the members of the organization to express her thanks and appreciation for the volunteer services that helped her bury her sister. She has also become the 8th member of the PWM.
The group is currently planning a fundraiser breakfast to help to pay for some of its initial activities in the community.
Women are becoming more visible in community and political activities. The Liberian Women Initiative and the Golden Girls and other Prayer Groups are just a few of the women’s groups that are currently impacting the Liberian community scene.
The women of the group are:
1. Estella Taka
2. Anita Zean
3. Edwina Willie
4. Gifty Alberta White
5. Helen Kaiyeepu
6. Annette Urey
7. Victoria Pour
The group can be contacted at 612-423-3354 or 612-236-7294.
Also in other community news, Vicky Koliwala celebrated her baby’s shower at the home of Mr.& Mrs. Alvin Jallah. The baby is due soon. The shower hosted friends and families. The father, Mr. Ezekiel Doe of Lone Star fame was also present at the ceremonies.

During the weekend under review, Fridley High School also hosted their senior prom. The BushChicken was able to capture a sample of color from that occasion.
